Feedback Requested on VPL Paper Outline

Thanks to those who were able to join the call yesterday. Today’s update includes:

  • Feedback Requested on VPL Paper Outline
  • VPL Extension
  • M & E Survey Online
  • February3 2015 Teleconference – 3-4pm EST

Feedback Requested on VPL Paper Outline

We had a small group on our call yesterday, and while we had some good discussion about the paper, we would appreciate feedback from other team members on the proposed outline we reviewed.

Colleagues are asked to please review the proposed outline and send Dave any feedback by Monday December 8 (click here to download).

Dave will be putting aside two days next week to start writing and any feedback beforehand would be helpful.

M & E Survey Online

The M & E Survey for November/December is now online. Connectors are asked to please complete this survey before the holidays:

VPL Extension

Earlier this fall we requested an extension of the VPL from the end of December 2014 to the end of February 2015.

We have received confirmation that IDRC is putting forward a recommendation to extend the project until February 28 2015.

Next Teleconference: Tuesday February 3 2015 – 3-4pm EST

Colleagues more involved in writing projects will likely connect earlier in January 2015, though our next team call will not be until Tuesday February 3 2015 from 3-4pm EST.  This will likely be the second last official VPL call before the project wraps up and is incorporated into the CCGHR’s next strategic plan.

This has been an update for the VPL project team.  Updates are sent out every other Wednesday.  If you missed the last update please click here to read.

CCGH Summary, M & E Survey, & December 2 Teleconference

After getting caught up in the whirlwind of the annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) and other CCGHR-related meetings in Ottawa, a VPL update is due to reconnect on work for the coming months. This update contains information on the following:

  • CCGH 2014 Summary re. VPL
  • M & E Survey Online
  • VPL Extension
  • December 2 Teleconference – 3-4pm EST

CCGH 2014 Summary

From October 30 to November 5 a number of CCGHR colleagues gathered in Ottawa. This time involved a board retreat, the annual meeting of our University Advisory Council (UAC), an inaugural Canadian Global Health Students & Young Professionals Summit, the CCGH, and a CCGHR Gathering Perspectives dialogue. Each of these pieces in some way connected with the VPL. Highlights for the team include:

  • VPL Report to CCGHR Board of Directors (click for the report): A report was submitted for review and discussion as the CCGHR develops a new strategic plan. The major outcome of this report was an acknowledgement that the tools of the VPL form the foundation of all of the CCGHR’s work, as the organization itself is a virtual network.
  • Oral Presentation at CCGH: Dave presented the findings of the VPL so far as part of a session on innovation and technology in global health.

M & E Survey Online

The M & E Survey for October/November is now online. Connectors are asked to please complete this survey prior to our next call (see below).

VPL Extension

Earlier this fall we requested an extension of the VPL from the end of December 2014 to the end of February 2015. We are hoping to receive official word soon about this request and will have an update during our December 2 meeting.

This would likely mean three more formal VPL calls in 2015 that would help us determine next steps for our platforms beyond the end of the project itself.

December 2 Teleconference – 3-4pm EST

As we missed our November teleconference due to CCGH, our next teleconference will be Tuesday December 2 from 3-4pm EST. During this call we’ll discuss:

  • outcomes from CCGH 2014 and the role of the VPL in the next CCGHR Strategic Plan
  • a rough outline of a paper for peer review
  • plans for the remainder of 2014 and for project review and wrap up in January-February 2015

This has been an update for the VPL project team.  Updates are sent out every other Wednesday.  If you missed the last update please click here to read.

Writing Plans | September 25-October 10

As an outcome of our call on September 16th, we agreed on the following plans to confirm by October 10 for developing one paper to come out of the project:

  • agreement on who will write; agreement on first, second and contributing authors, and expected responsibilities. Agreement among first and second on tasks.
  • agreement on a VPL “feedback team” (ie folks who want to see what’s been written and provide constructive feedback – these people will be acknowledged in the paper but not credited).
  • agreement on major themes and how the dots might connect
  • agreement on number, type, themes of papers
  • ideas on existing papers, authors, keywords for lit search.

Dave has already started on some of this work with Sandy, Leslie, and Laura. Others are asked to please confirm with Dave your interest level and availability regarding authorship or feedback team by Friday October 10th.

Writing Plans Beyond October 10th

Once plans are set, we are proposing the following timelines for a writing project for peer review:
  • October 26: Complete theoretical section based on lit review
  • November 28: First draft complete and shared with VPL feedback team
  • Christmas Break: Second draft complete
  • Early 2015: Final version complete.

Platform Summaries Review & September 16 Teleconference

Today’s update covers the following:

  • Platform Summaries for Review
  • September 16 Teleconference – 2:30-4:00pm

Platform Summaries for Review

Many thanks to colleagues for providing short summaries of each platform and the themes that could contribute to a case story.  These summaries are now online and can be reviewed by colleagues by clicking the links below:

ACTION: All VPL team members are asked to please take 30 minutes prior to our next meeting to read through these short summaries. Feel free to add comments at the bottom of the page or within the Google Doc links available and please come to our September 16 meeting prepared to offer comments on insights gained from this reading.

September 16 Teleconference

Our next teleconference is this coming Tuesday September 16 from 2:30-4:00 EDT. This call will be used to discuss specifics on the following writing projects:

  • Projects for Peer Review Publication
  • Guidebook for Virtual Platforms (with short case stories)
  • Report to IDRC

Our goal by the end of the call will be to have raised common themes arising from across our platform experiences, identifying where they might fit in each of the above.  We’ll also have identified writing teams and some initial timelines for each writing project.

Dave and Sandy will be meeting on Monday to develop an agenda, which will be shared on Monday evening along with a WebEx invitation. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to prepare for this call and we look forward to a good discussion.

Sharing Publication Ideas & September Meeting Poll

Today’s update covers the following:

  • Sharing Publication Ideas
  • September Meeting Poll

Sharing Publication Ideas

As mentioned in our last update, a 2 page document has been developed for colleagues to review regarding possible publication ideas (click the following link to access): VPL Publication Ideas August 2014

In discussions with team members since our call, an idea we’re proposing is to share thoughts on themes and stories before our next call (see below for poll), allowing us to have a good discussion about specific writing projects.  This would involve:

  1. Connectors writing a short (1/2 page) outline in bullet points of specific aspects of their platform that they would like to highlight in a story (e.g. what has worked, what hasn’t, surprises, etc.).
  2. Posting these outlines on our VPL platform prior to the next meeting.
  3. Project team members reviewing each outline, providing comments where necessary, and being prepared to give more feedback during our next call.

Based on this plan, we would use our next call to define specific writing projects, identifying who will be involved, while sharing our experiences and getting feedback from the team.

ACTION: We are asking that all Connectors complete a short outline with bullet points by Friday August 29.

Thank you for taking the time to put your thoughts down on paper (or screen!).  Stories will be shared online for comment and feedback at least one week prior to a meeting in mid-September.

September Meeting – Doodle Poll

Please complete the following Doodle Poll with your availability for a September meeting.  We would like to have as many team members on the call as possible, which is why we have changed from our regularly scheduled Tuesday call to accommodate.

ACTION: Please complete the following Doodle Poll ASAP so we can confirm a date that works for everyone in September.

Thanks to everyone for your continued work and dedication to this project.  Looking forward to some very engaging discussions in the coming weeks as we take stock of our learning over the course of the project.

August 5 Teleconference Summary & Publication Ideas Concept Note

Thanks to those who were on our call on Tuesday for a good group discussion.  Today’s update covers the following:

  • August 5 Teleconference Summary
  • Publication Ideas Concept Note – feedback requested
  • September Meeting – shifting from Tuesday Sept 2

August 5 Teleconference Summary

Our Tuesday teleconference was fairly quiet in terms of updates as many groups are less active during the summer months.  The majority of the call was spent discussing the timeline for the remainder of the project (we’ve just requested an extension to the end of February 2015) and brainstorming about possible publication ideas.  This discussion was very fruitful and identified a number of different possibilities in terms of both outputs and themes for exploration. Minutes will be sent out with our next update.  Please see below for follow-up.

Publication Ideas Concept Note

Based on our Tuesday call, a 2 page document has been developed for colleagues to review.  The document contains possible ideas for outputs and themes, while also asking colleagues to consider timelines and their potential involvement. Please click the following link to access:

VPL Publication Ideas August 2014

Please review this document and provide any initial comments or feedback to Dave via email.  Dave will also be touching base individually with colleagues to discuss your thoughts over August and into early September.

The results of these discussions will inform our September team call (see below).

September Meeting – shifting from Tuesday Sept 2

During our August 5 call we agreed that our next discussion would benefit from having all team members present.  Once colleagues return from vacation in mid August, we will be sending out a Doodle poll to find a time that works for everyone in mid September.

Please remove our September 2 meeting from your calendar.

Social Media Modules, IDRC Report, July M & E, and August 5th Teleconference Reminder

Sorry for the silence of the last few weeks.  Dave was on vacation and just returned late last week.  This week’s update includes:

  • Social Media Modules Launched
  • IDRC Report Submitted
  • July M & E
  • August 5 Teleconference Reminder

Social Media Modules Launched

As some of you are aware, the CCGHR recently launched a set of social media modules for non-profits.  VPL team member Clarke Cole developed these modules last fall as part of an undergraduate project during her 4th year at McMaster University.  The modules will be very helpful to the CCGHR going forward as well as to other organizations looking to improve their online engagement and communications.  Kudos to Clarke on a job well done!  The modules can be accessed by clicking here.

IDRC Report Submitted

Our second report to IDRC was submitted on July 4.  A copy of the report has been posted in the FOR REVIEW section of the Dropbox for those interested.

July Monitoring & Evaluation

Next week will be the last week of July and thus will be our monitoring and evaluation week.  Please connect with Dave if you would like support in your monitoring and evaluation work.

Please click here for the link to the July M & E survey.

Thank you to all of our connectors for your continued work and dedication to this project!

August 5 Teleconference Reminder

A reminder that our next teleconference call is on Tuesday August 5th from 3-4pm EDT.  As we are in the midst of summer some colleagues may be away, but we will have the call if enough people are around to join.  Please let Dave know this week if you will not be able to attend the August 5 call so that we can plan accordingly.

This has been a weekly update for the VPL project team.  Updates are sent out every Wednesday.  If you missed last week’s update please click here to read.

July 3 Teleconference Call Reminder

This week’s update is a reminder of our teleconference call tomorrow, July 3, from 3-4pm EDT.  The call will be hosted on WebEx and all team members will receive an invite before we get started.

Our proposed agenda is as follows:

  1. Platform Updates from Connectors (25 minutes): Please be prepared to share a short 2-3 minute update on progress over the last 2 months.  We’ll save questions for our discussion.  NOTE: All of our May Monitoring and Evaluation surveys are available in the FOR REVIEW folder in Dropbox or on our platform M & E page: http://ccghr.ca/vpl/project-guide/monitoring-evaluation/
  2. Advisor Feedback (5-10 minutes): Comments or thoughts on the project from our team advisors.
  3. Group Discussion (25 minutes): We’re now at the halfway point of our implementation phase and as of July 1 the project has now been running for one year.  A major idea that has arisen in multiple platforms recently is that of structure.  We would like to pose the following questions to the group to guide our mid-point discussion:
    1. What has been the importance of structure in the challenges/opportunities we have faced as our platforms and networks have developed?
    2. Going forward, what aspects of this learning can we apply to our work? What are the implications for how networks are built, managed, and fostered?
  4. Next Team Call: Tuesday August 5 from 3-4pm EDT

This has been a weekly update for the VPL project team.  Updates are sent out every Wednesday.  If you missed last week’s update please click here to read.

Thanks everyone for completing these by the end of the day on Friday June 27.

July 3 Teleconference – 3-4 pm EDT
